LOVELY LEO

DSC00936Had really bad news about ten days ago.  My friends in Ireland emailed to say that their 6 year old dog, Leo, had been diagnosed with an inoperable tumor on the pancreas, that it was an aggressive type of cancer, and that the vet had recommended putting him down since there was nothing that could be done.  It was a shock for me since I had just seen him in April and he was in the prime of his life.  Can only imagine what it is like for the family since he was the sweetest, kindest, and most loving of dogs.  I don’t think I’ve ever met a dog I liked better, and he will leave a huge hole in their family.

Leo came from the shelter, and he looked to me to be a cross between a Lab and a Golden Retriever.  He always barked at me when I first arrived to stay, then once he knew it was me, he greeted me each time I came and went.  He wasn’t allowed on the furniture, so I would get down on the floor to scratch his belly or brush his coat, and he really loved that.   Also the doggie treats I brought with me from California!  You can see from the photo above that he stationed himself near the dining table, watching to see if anything dropped to the floor which he could lap up as soon as the humans were done eating.  He was always polite and patient.

My friends live about 100 yards from a small cove on the Irish Sea, and one of Leo’s favorite things was to run down there and go swimming.  He was the kind of dog who didn’t always have to be on a lead because he was so well behaved.  After a swim, he would shake himself off and then follow whoever had him out walking back to the house, where he would shake a few more times and then plop onto his bed for a rest.

It’s always sad to lose a beloved pet, especially when they are so young.  I will miss Leo.

    • Yes, very young, and that’s why the family were in such a state of shock. He was incredibly sweet and gentle.
