I love hoisin sauce, and this vinaigrette gives me that flavor.  This dressing can be used on any greens, but I sometimes spoon a little over thinly sliced peppers and snow peas.


2 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

2 teaspoons finely chopped green onions

2 teaspoons lemon juice

2 teaspoons (I use 3) hoisin sauce

1 teaspoon dark sesame oil

1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper

1/8 teaspoon salt

Whisk all ingredients together until well combined.  Toss over lettuce or other vegetables and top with sesame seeds.



  1. This sounds so good, Martha! I would like to try it. What brand of Hoisin sauce do you use, and where do you find it? I’m not very familiar with buying it. I know I love that flavor when we go out for Chinese food, though. Thanks for the recipe!


    • The one I find in my local store most often is LEE KUM KEE brand. I got hooked on hoisin sauce in my early 20’s when I tried Moo Shoo dishes for the first time (you smear it on the pancake before putting the filling in). I love it on a variety of things now. Most grocery stores have it (Kroger for example) but I am in California. Whole Foods would have it for sure.


      • Thank you for that information, Martha. I will also have to try Moo Shoo if it has Hoisin sauce on it. We have Kroger’s (called Fry’s) here so I will have to get some so I can make your recipe.


      • The mooshoo is wrapped in pancakes (sort of like flour tortillas) that have the hoisin sauce smeared on them. Delicious!
