SORRENTO PARK, DALKEY, IRELAND

This is a really old image (about 1905 I would guess) of Sorrento Park, Dalkey, County Dublin, Ireland.  That is Dalkey Island in the background.  You can see the Martello Tower in the center of the island, and the remains of the church and fortress are much bigger than they are today, no doubt because today’s ruins have deteriorated in the past 100 years.

What I find fascinating about this photo is that none of the houses along the coast in the right of the photo had been built when this image was captured.    Today the coastline is wall to wall housing except for a small patch along the east side of the Sorrento Park.  The park runs from that large rocky mound in the middle of the image down to the shoreline.  Look at the round  space in the inset below, that is also part of the park.

The front chimneys of Sorrento Terrace are barely visible to the right in this image.  Here is an inset below.  Notice the women in long skirts walking along Sorrento Road in front of the Terrace houses.
