IRISH BATHERS circa 1900

Irish bathers, bathing costumes, Ireland, photography, Irish beachThis is another photo that I bought in an “antiques” shop in Dublin.  I was walking along the quays on the River Liffey downtown one day and came across a shop that boasted antiques, but was as much junk as anything else.  When I asked if they had any old photographs, they came up with an envelope of half a dozen images.  This was one of them.  I think it’s about 1900, but again, it’s only a guess.  No identification as to location either.  Note the bathing house to the right.  Modest ladies were wheeled out to a certain depth and then allowed to go in the water without being seen.  Very proper.  VERY different from today!
