BECTIVE ABBEY, County Meath, Ireland, circa 1905

bective abbey, county meath, river boyne, ireland, Irish abbey, cistercian abbeyThis is another old photo, this time of the ruins of a Cistercian abbey built in the 1100’s.  It was called Bective Abbey and was a companion to Mellifont Abbey which is also in the area.

I looked up the history of this abbey on Wikipedia, and the ruins today don’t look substantially different from this photo, which I think was taken about 1900 to 1905 and used on a early postcard.  Wikipedia says that the ruins are on the River Boyne in County Meath, in the middle of a farmer’s field…nothing seems to have changed in a hundred years!
