ST. BEGNET’s CHURCH – Dalkey Island, Dalkey, County Dublin, Ireland

001This is an old postcard view of the church ruins on Dalkey Island, County Dublin, Ireland.  The wording says it is St. Benedict’s Chapel, but this is incorrect.  In earlier times, St. Benedict was often confused with St. Begnet, who was one of the female virgin saints.  If you go to Wikipedia, there is a history there which includes a bit about Dalkey Island and a quote from Hugh Leonard about St. Begnet.  The card was published by Richardson of the Leinster Restaurant in Dalkey.  It is long gone now and I could not find a reference to such a restaurant in Dalkey, but they do come and go frequently in this little seaside village, especially in recent times!
