This recipe was written by my mother on one of the blank pages in her old cookbook, the one she used for decades.  No instructions or baking temperature, so you have to play it by ear.  I am most astonished by the “flour to thicken” ingredient listing.  This is obviously a butter/sugar cookie, so you don’t want to use too much flour.  I tried these recently and added some lemon zest.  I used about a cup and a half of flour. Here it is:


1-1/2 cups butter

3 cups sugar

5 eggs

1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder

flour to thicken

Roll out or drop

That’s it!
