Snapshot From Long Lane Cemetery – 1920

scan0073aHere is an older photo taken at Long Lane Cemetery, Dallas County, Missouri in 1920.  It was the year that my great grandmother, Lydia Margaret Massie, died on February 5th.  The photo was probably taken when the stone was put up.   My mother remembered being taken to her grandmother’s bedside when she was dying.  Each grandchild got to say goodbye.  My mother would have been about 4-1/2 years old, but she had an incredible memory of relatively early events.

That’s my grandmother, Inez McMenus Shank, standing by the stone with baby Geneva Elaine.  Inez had a total of 12 pregnancies and one miscarriage.  Of the 12 pregnancies, eight children survived, Geneva being the youngest.  One other baby was conceived in 1921, but he died after only a few weeks of life, and my grandmother died shortly thereafter.  In the photo above, she was 39 years old.  She looks so much like her mother in this photo…her mother is later years.
