Walter Shank – About 1932

scan0082This is my mother’s half brother, Walter Shank, taken about 1932 when he was 7 or 8 years old.  His mother was a widow with three children who married my grandfather after my grandmother died in 1921.  Eli and Carrie Massey Shank had three more children, and Walter was the eldest.  I have posted photos of him before, and as I said earlier, he was in WWII in the Navy but was killed in a car accident while traveling from Lebanon back to Phillipsburg in Laclede County, Missouri.  A deer ran across the road, hit the windshield of the car, and a shard of glass went into Walter’s neck.  He bled to death before help could be summoned.  A tragic loss.  He is buried near his parents at the New Hope Cemetery at Long Lane in Dallas County.
