FRANCIE McMENUS and FRIEND – Phillipsburg, MO

006This is a snapshot photograph of my mother’s first cousin, Francie McMenus, and an unknown friend.  That’s Francie on the left.  I believe this was taken at the side of her parents’ home in Phillipsburg, Missouri, about 1916 or 1917.

  1. Great pic! As an aside, one of the things that intrigues me about these old family pix by their houses is that people who later on had more manicured lawns (or next generation) used to have such “working yard” yards by their houses. Have you noticed that?

    • Well, with cold winter weather and snow, their options for flowers and such were limited. However, I do know what you mean. They seems to have lumber and tools around the sides of the houses, with only a kitchen garden in back of the house in summer. Later on, it seemed they planted flower gardens and such with plants that would weather the cold winter weather. My mother always said when she was a child (1915 to about 1930), they only had roses in the front yard with just a couple of hardy flowering shrubs closer to the house.
