My cousin Eleanor Brumm sent me this recipe about ten or twelve years ago.  She said it was the favorite cake of our Aunt Marge and that she always wanted it on her birthday.  It’s simple to make and I would never have thought to put cocoa powder with applesauce!

2 cups sifted flour

1 cup sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

3 tablespoons cocoa powder

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon allspice

1/4 teaspoon cloves

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons soda

Sift above and add to following mixture:

1-1/2 cups applesauce

1 cup chopped nuts

1/2 cup cooking oil

1 cup raisins

Mix all above ingredients and sifted dry ingredients together.  Bake at 325 degrees F for 50 to 60 minutes till toothpick comes out clean.  Can be baked in a 13 x 9 inch pan or bundt pan.

1/4 cup butter, 3 oz light cream cheese, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1-1/3 cups powdered sugar.  Beat till creamy and spread on top of cooled cake.
