001aThis is Hazel Shank Collier, my mother’s first cousin.  Hazel’s father, John Edward Shank, was the brother of my grandfather, Joseph Eli Shank.  Uncle Ed first married Bessie Tate and Hazel was born in 1905.  For whatever reason, Bessie left and did not take Hazel with her.  Ed and Bessie were divorced in 1907 and he married Ora Mae Tait.  They had one son and then Ora Mae died.  In 1925 Ed married Blanche Bennett and had three more children.  This photo of Ed’s oldest child, Hazel, was taken about 1924-25.  Look at the beadwork on the collar of her dress!  Hazel married Horace Collier but had no children.  She died in 1966 and is buried in the New Hope Cemetery, Long Lane, Dallas County.  When my grandmother, Inez McMenus Shank’s first baby son died in 1900, the family bought six burial plots at New Hope.  Eventually, a total of four baby sons would be buried there, then my grandmother in 1921.  Hazel was buried in the last of the six plots in 1966.  My grandfather, Eli Shank, remarried and is buried with his second wife and  youngest son Walter also at New Hope, very near to the first six graves.
