MARTELLO TOWER, Dalkey Island, Dalkey, County Dublin, Ireland

P1010671aThe Martello Towers were built along the east coast of Ireland to protect against an invasion by Napoleon early in the 1800’s.  This one survives on Dalkey Island.  One of the most famous ones is in Sandycove, just north along the coast, where James Joyce lived for about 4 days before leaving after Olive St. John Gogarty fired a gun.  It is now the James Joyce Museum.  They are not very big but housed British soldiers defending Ireland against the French.
