More From Glendalough, County Wicklow, Ireland

ireland2014-13Glendalough is located in a glacial valley and has two lakes.  There was a community of people already living there when the monks, led by St. Kevin, came to the spot and set up the monastery.  There are many, many gravestones around the ruins of the church, some of them as modern as the 1800’s.  The ancient stones tend to weather or get buried in mud and grass.  It’s unusual to see a stone anywhere with dates  earlier than the first half of the 1700’s and then they can be very hard to read.
