EDNAH FORKNER – 1908 Stevensville, Montana

This is the daughter of Lon and Annie Forkner, who moved their family to Stevensville, Montana from Conway, Missouri in 1906.  This photo of Ednah Barbara Forkner was taken in 1908.  She was married to Frank Lewis on New Year’s Eve that year in a double wedding with her older sister, Ethel.  Ethel married Bill Rodgers.  Look at the way her hair is piled up on top of her head!  The family changed their surname from Forkner to Faulkner when they got to Montana.  Research into the name in the South indicates that the name was originally Faulkner (from England) but that with rudimentary education and phonetic spelling, like many surnames, it evolved into Forkner.  They are related to the same branch of the family as the famous writer, William Faulkner, having landed in North Carolina for several generations before ancestor Micajah Forkner moved on to Missouri in the 1840s.
