By 1937, my parents were in California, having left Missouri in 1934 with the hope of finding work in the Los Angeles area. However, my mother always talked about the summer picnics in the county where she grew up, Laclede County, MO. This is the newspaper ad for the 1937 picnic that was taken from the Conway Record. One of her cousins, Warren McMenus, always opened a concessions stand at this picnic, and later when he and his wife, Flora, came to California, they worked most of the state and county fairs well into the l960s. I love this ad because of the “PLENTY OF PURE WELL WATER” line. Dug Thomas is not a name I recognize, though there was a Thomas family that some of my mother’s mother’s relations married into. Burchfield and Rhoten are family names from Webster County, too.
