Hi, very nice photos.
I was wondering if I could use the one of Colimore Harbour blown-up really big on the internal wall of a shop in Dalkey? I’m not sure where the copyright claim lies, apparently it is 50years after the demise of the author in Ireland (70years in the States I think). Do you have any idea which newspaper it came from?

I spent two weeks in Ireland last year at the end of March, beginning of April. Had a lovely 6 or 7 days of perfect weather, then snow, sleet, rain and hail! Hope to return in the autumn if all goes well this year.

I’ve been going to Ireland, nearly every year, since 1990, and have spent considerable amounts of time in Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal. Friends live in Westport, Dublin, Rathvilly and Tramore, so I travel around a bit each trip. Will dig out more of my own photos soon, I’ve put up a fair number of Sligo and Donegal in the last few months. Ancestors came from Fermanagh and Derry, so will be exploring those areas in the next year or two, also.

Hi Robin, Did you happen to get to Fermanagh? That’s where Lawrence came from. I am going to do the ancestry.com DNA test in the next few months (or have one of my nephews do it since male DNA is more conclusive for some reason) and see if we can definitively connect to Lawrence. I think all clues lead to Eli (Lawrence’s son) having had two families, and our Joseph coming from the first family, but we may never know for sure.

I’m interested to know how you discovered Frescati? I have done research on that building and grew up nearby. The directors of Roches Stores came and went, but their destruction lives on. Well karma is a bitch. They sold the land in the early 1990s, bought it back at the peak of the property bubble for many times what they sold it for. Their entire involvement with Blackrock has been a sorry episode for all involved

When I acquired the photo, I just went online and researched. There is a detailed article on Wikipedia and other sites. I first went to Ireland in 1990 and the shopping center came to my attention on subsequent trips. I had no idea there was a house there that had been torn down, though I did wonder about why the shopping center was named Frescati. Was there again earlier this month.

Hi Martha – over the years you have posted quite a number of pictures and historical notes about Dun Laoghaire/Kingstown. I am attempting to put together a new structure for posting items of local history in a site called “Annals of Dun Laoghaire”. Oh Martha, I just read your article about the town in Ireland where Maeve Binchy lives (somtimes) and you wrote this article years back and in 2013 your wrote..the late nights with lots of red wine are over…..I stopped in my tracks…worried…I am a grandma..mother..wife….freelance lectures…and I suddenly wonder, are the late nights over for good ;-)??? She was in great form despite the fact that she had various physical problems. Our meeting was at a local pub as part of the Dalkey Book Festival. Dalkey is the village where she lived. A lot of my Irish friends married and started families late, so when I first started going over in the early 90’s, small kids getting up early in the morning definitely put a damper on how late we stayed out at night. Then we all just got older and decided the late nights (and red wine) were not worth it! LOL!

Thanks Martha, for your photos. We’ve got a stock certificate from the Farmers State Bank in Phillipsburg that our Great-Great (+/- a ‘great’) grandfather bought in 1909. Sure was fun to see the bank, especially since our last name is now Wilson;)

He was born in 1733 as near as we can tell and died in 1813, aged 80. If you go to Geni.com there are some postings there by people who list his father, but it varies; one from Fermanagh, another from Tipperary. I think all their kids were born in NC starting about 1758-60 so he would have immigrated some time before that, but I don’t have the exact information.
